Fed: Police chief to convene regional terrorism summit

MELBOURNE, Dec 28 AAP - Australia's police chief said today he hoped to hold a summitof regional police forces to improve cooperation and capacity against a possible terroristattack.

Australian Federal Police (AFP) Commissioner Mick Keelty has met with representativesfrom Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore to discuss convening a summit early nextyear.

Mr Keelty said the summit would discuss how to respond to a similar situation to theBali bombing in October which killed more than 180 people.

The proposed meeting would also discuss ways to deal with transnational crime, particularlydrug trafficking.

"One thing that emerged out of the Bali bombing is the difference in capacities betweenAustralian and Indonesian police forces to respond to a disaster," Mr Keelty said.

"The summit would give everyone a better understanding of other country's resourcesand the best way to cooperate should there be another multi-national disaster."

The Commissioner said Australia had significant resources, particularly in the areaof disaster victim identification which could be shared with other countries.

Mr Keelty said a strong relationship between the AFP and regional counterparts wouldbe vital in coordinating the investigation in the event a crisis occurred.

"The AFP had been working on its relationship with Indonesia for a number of yearsand it proved invaluable," he said.
